After a lot of reading and a lot of list making, I have finally downsized my wardrobe. I was actually pretty tough work!
It's amazing how your brain tries to rationalise keeping or not keeping certain items. There where things I never wore that I was trying to persuade myself to keep and other things I could let go of without a second thought. In the end, it all comes down to being rational. If you are thinking about downsizing/simplifying too, you can begin by asking yourself some really simple questions:
- How do I feel about this item?
- Have I worn it in the last 3 months?
- Do I have an emotional attachment to this item?
After asking myself these questions it became much easier to make a decision. The things I found myself emotionally attached to had to go through a bit more consideration:
- Am I attached to the item or a moment the item reminds me of?
If I could identify a particular moment or event that made me feel emotional about an item, I would think about that moment and ask myself if I needed the item to remember the event. If the answer was no (and it almost always was), in the donation box it went!
I still have a few more things to go through, like out of season clothes that are in storage and non-clothing items, but I feel like these questions will help me go through the rest of my simplifying journey with a lot more ease. It is so nice to have actually started this process, and for the first time, I feel like I can finish it. The task isn't nearly as daunting as I had imagined but it wasn't easy. Now that I've started, I am really excited to keep going!
My goal is to finish purging and organising by the end of June. I will definitely be documenting my progress so stick around! I hope that if you are considering downsizing/simplifying your wardrobe that this post helps you take the first steps! Let me know how it goes!
