Located at number 18 Folgate Street, in Spitalfields, there is a house that has caught my attention numerous times while walking the neighborhood. With its giant black door, red shudders and working gas lamp, it never fails to spark intrigue. This beautiful place popped into my mind again recently and I finally decided to do a little research.
Dennis Severs' House is a time capsule. Once you enter its doors you leave the present behind and step into the early 18th Century. As you journey through the house, which is loaded with an immense amount of heritage antiques, it's not just the sights that transport you but also the smells and sounds. Mr. Severs, the creator of this amazing exhibit, lived in the house in much the same way as the original occupants might have done. He chose to do this for his own personal enjoyment and to create an atmosphere. Something I find absolutely amazing!
I don't want to give too much away but traveling through the home's ten extraordinary rooms offers such a rare and authentic experience. Lit only by candlelight and roaring fires, it isn't a museum, but a still life you've been allowed to just walk straight into. The atmosphere is magic and I highly suggest a visit! Until January 4th, the house is showcasing its annual Christmas Installation. It is decked to the hilt with phenomenal yuletide decor which fills you with such nostalgia and festive feelings. One week before Christmas was the perfect time to visit!
As no photography is allowed inside, there is not much to be seen here, but that just adds to the mystery. This beautiful place is a must-see! I definitely plan to return again when the regular installation resumes.
